Description

Abstract
The stock status of striped marlin is of enormous concern to various fisheries and conservation groups, and is classified as near-threatened by the IUCN. Stock assessment research of theWCNPO striped marlin working group conducted by ISC (2011) suggested a long-term decreasing trend of the spawning stock biomass and a high risk of overexploitation for populations. Development of an optimal management strategy for fisheries resources requires a good understanding of fish population and ecosystem dynamics. Due to mounting concern on the status of striped marlin populations, the current research project will collect biological data on age, growth and reproduction, and then use this information to develop a stochastic per-recruit model (SPRM) for understanding the population dynamics of striped marlin in Taiwan waters. In the first year of the project, the experimental design will focus on field sampling and the quantification of the age-and-growth structure. The second year will continue field sampling and with an emphasis on examining variability in life history traits and reproductive dynamics. Results from these two years will serve to improve our knowledge of the life history traits of this ecologically and economically important species and provide critical input-parameters for the estimation of biological reference points (BRPs) based on SPRM. Hence, in the third year and final year of the project, we will focus on integrating the previous two years’ results into the development of the SPRM through intensive simulation and estimation of BRPs taking uncertainty into account. Results of this project will provide much needed quantitative information on the status of striped marlin stocks and will make major contributions to the proper management and sustainable exploitation of this important resource in Taiwan waters
