Description

Abstract
In order to gain international competitiveness, many universities in Taiwan now have required PhD students, especially those in science, to publish indexed English research articles before graduation. Accordingly, within departments courses have been implemented to help these students pass this graduation requirement; these courses are either taught by English language teaching professionals or by disciplinary experts alone. The problem with course instructors from one single field lies in their lack of knowledge from another field. English language teaching professionals may find it difficult to deal with content knowledge in class, whereas disciplinary experts, albeit their writing competence, may find it challenging to teach linguistic knowledge explicitly. An ideal solution to this problem is to have ELT professionals and disciplinary experts collaboratively teach research writing; however, few attempts have made to initiate cross-disciplinary collaboration despite its potential benefits. The purpose of this project is to take the initiative by having an ELT professional and Marine Engineering experts team-teach in an innovative English research writing course. In this course, the ELT professional will adopt the English for Specific Purposes pedagogy by teaching the move structure and linguistic features based on genre analysis; the disciplinary experts will share strategies for writing research article sections with a focus on the content. In addition, after students hand in their assignments, both instructors will grade the assignments and hold workshops together to address the problems in students’ writing. To examine students’ writing development, not only will a pretest and a posttest will be administered but students’ assignments will be collected and analyzed. Students and the disciplinary experts will also be interviewed to evaluate this course as well as the cross-disciplinary collaboration initiative. The findings of this project will not only shed light on second/foreign language writing research but also provide a novel pedagogical framework for teaching writing for publication in English to non-native English speaking students."
