Description

Abstract
Globalization has profoundly influenced the way knowledge is disseminated; to date almost all prestigious journals and textbooks are published in English. In order to prepare non-native English speaking students for functioning in globalized academic communities, universities started implementing English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels. However, many of the courses were designed without a systematic needs analysis. While some researchers who recognized the importance of needs analysis and examined undergraduate students’ needs for English learning in several disciplines, little research has investigated the needs of students at graduate level in relation to EAP reading and writing. As graduate students are exposed to academic English literacy more often than undergraduate students, this two-year study aims to fill in this gap by setting a two-fold objective: 1) to investigate both Taiwanese graduate students’ and professors’ perceptions on the needs of graduate students in relation to EAP literacy, and 2) to investigate the perceptions of both graduate students and professors on current EAP literacy courses, including the effectiveness and challenges of the courses as well as ways to improve them. In the first year, a questionnaire survey will be sent to graduate students to understand their difficulties with EAP literacy and their evaluations about current EAP literacy courses. A group of students will also be invited for a follow-up interview to explore possible variations among disciplines and students’ learning backgrounds. In the second year, after an initial results have been obtained from students’ surveys and interviews, a revised questionnaire will be sent to professors to understand their understandings about EAP literacy competence required of Taiwanese graduate students, difficulties students encounter when performing EAP literacy tasks, effectiveness of current EAP literacy courses, challenges of these courses and solutions to improve them. A group of professors will also be invited for a follow-up interview in order to obtain in-depth views from English instructors, subject instructors, and department heads. Then, students’ perceptions will be compared to those of professors for a more comprehensive analysis. The results of this study can shed light on what Taiwanese graduate students lack, need, and want to learn about EAP literacy, and offer insights into curriculum design and development. It is hoped that such a comprehensive survey on the needs of Taiwanese graduate students can point to future directions for EAP literacy curriculum renovation and EAP literacy research on non-native English speaking graduate students."
