Description

Abstract
Because of cost down and technology maturity, 3D printing has become popular in manufacturing in recent years. This makes mass customization easier and personalized products more possible than ever before. However, there are still many challenges constraining the implement of 3D printing, such as high unit cost, long processing time, poor surface quality, etc. Under this context, a hybrid mode combining traditional production mode and 3D printing manufacturing seems a practical solution, especially in aerospace and defense industries. Many firms have begun integrating 3D printing manufacturing into their current supply chain. This research will develop a mixed-integer programming (MIP) optimization model to allocate 3D printing manufacturing in the current supply chain to minimize the overall cost of the supply chain. Furthermore, based on this model, we will study the impact of different scenarios in terms of technology development and various supply chain models on an overall supply chain.
