Description

Abstract
The purpose of the digital archive project is to store important cultural pieces in digital formats. Currently, the metadata of each cultural piece are represented in XML format. Therefore, it is extremely important to provide a good mechanism to query XML data in an efficient way. We plan to take three years to study the related topics. During the first and the second years, we have studied the differences between their representational capabilities, and proposed an effective method to represent relevant data and perform query transformation. The project proposed in this year, is to extend what we are doing now, and focuses on the real problem which the archiving institute is facing. The main research topics are as follows: (1) structural query processing: designing an efficient algorithm to process the structural constraints; (2) un-structured query processing: applying the information retrieval techniques, such as scoring functions and inverted lists, on XML data; (3) integrated query processing: implementing an integrated system to support both structural and un-structured query processing. The relevant techniques include the design of query algorithms and scoring functions. We plan to carry out this project for one more year. We also believe that the research result of this project could help the archiving institute manage the important information in a more efficient way.
