Description

Abstract
As one of the Catholic Missionaries branches, the Divine Word Missionaries started preaching gospels soon after its foundation in 1870s by German priest Arnold Janssen. In the 1880s, the missionaries arrived in China by setting its base in southern Shandong. After World War I, its first operations covered Henan, Gansu, Qinghai and Xinjiang provinces. In late 1940s, when the Communist regime was founded, the Catholic Divine Word Missionaries were expelled from China and in the 50s, the Missionaries turned to operate in southern Taiwan. In the 60s, the restoration of the Fu Jen Catholic University and the foundation of the parish tasks in Dapinglin in northern Taiwan were the primary tasks. The project in question is meant to deliver detailed remarks on the Divine Word Missionaries in Dapinglin since its arrival in Taiwan over 50 years ago. Since the 60s, 2 achievements outstand its 60-year-and-so evolution of the Divine Word Missionaries in Dapinglin, namely, they are the foundation of the Holy Trinity Church and the inauguration of the Dehua Girls’ Apartment. The first is meant to meet the demand of the senior Catholics having moved to northern Taiwan from all over China while the later is to serve young females who had come from southern Taiwan to work or study in northern Taiwan. Both are vivid proofs that the Divine Word Missionaries cared both Catholics and non-Catholics by providing services to people of all backgrounds, social classes in need. What is worth mentioning is the Dehua Girls’ Apartment, which show cases the changing image of Dapinglin where, in late 1960s, factories of different natures founded by international investors were in need of female workers. Over the last 20 years and so, the area turned from an industrial sector to a residential one. On the other hand, this period of time is key to the Catholic Church in Taiwan when it comes to its establishment in Taiwan when the population of local Catholics expanded as the church grew from southern Taiwan to northern Taiwan. Besides, Taiwan’s retreat from the United Nations and the shift of diplomatic recognitions to China did mean a lot to the Catholic Church in Taiwan. All these are elements worth discussing and this project is to produce backgrounds for analysis of all issues specified above."
