Description

Abstract
Despite the fact that Taiwan’s academics have been researching the church history for quite some time, the effort had long been focused on the Dominicans, which came to Taiwan first, the Franciscan that started preaching in China first or the most renowned Society of Jesus and the Divine Word Missionaries was little known to the public. As I was part of the study of the Boxers, the activities of the Divine Word Missionaries in northern China has been an interesting issue to me. On the other hand, starting the 21st Century, the researches on the Boxer took a new direction, which is quite different from the points of view highlighted by political, military, diplomatic or even the Boxer’s association with secret society in the past; instead, researches of social, cultural, historic issues or even exchanges of international cultures prevail. In this study, new remarks on the preaching of the church in northern China involving cultural exchanges are incorporated with special attentions to missionaries, particularly evangelization by foreign missionaries and training of local missionaries among other issues. Founded in 1875 by Fr. Arnold Janssen in Steyl, the Netherlands, the Divine Word Missionaries had 2 evangelists, Fr. Anzer Johann and Fr. Josef Freinademetz to China in 1879. They arrived at Po Li Zhuang, Yanggu County, Shandong Province through Hong Kong in 1882 starting the preaching of the church in China. From then on, the evangelization covered Henan, Gansu, Xinjiang, Qinghai Provinces and Beijing among other places. And after 1949, when the Chinese Communists forced the church out of China, the Divine Word Missionaries had as many as 500 and plus fathers and brothers in addition to some 100 Chinese clergies trained in China. I am quite interested in knowing the social service activities, the operational difficulties or cultural conflicts they had gone through during almost 70-year evangelization waged by the church in northern China as well as the ways they solved the crises and the problems there, which are the key issues in this research. The original resources that helped make this study possible are: the lists of the 700-and-plus foreign missionaries and local missionaries (including fathers and brothers) working in China, correspondence between the Divine Word Missionaries Netherlands headquarters and the missionaries serving in Shandong, operation reports between the Divine Word preachers working in Henan and American Province plus other first and second-hand documents for analysis and remarks to the study theme."
