"米幹神父(Fr. Thomas M. Megan, SVD, 1899-1951)為愛爾蘭裔美籍聖言會士，1919 年正式入聖言會芝加哥會院接受陶成教育，1926 年晉鐸後被派至中國河南南部信陽福傳，1933 年河南北部新鄉成為聖言會新的傳教區，1936 年米幹神父被指派為首任監牧，此後直至1948 年返回美國，其在中國持續服務長達二十年以上。綜觀米幹神父的中國福傳生涯，可概分為三階段，即河南信陽時期(1926-1936) 的十年、河南新鄉時期(1936-1941、1945-1948)約八年，及穿插於前後兩次新鄉期間中、因戰亂在華北數地機動性工作三年多(1941-1945)的時期，三階段各有其相應成果亦值得深入了解。本計畫實將米幹神父在華經歷分成兩部分探究，一強調其在信陽及新鄉時期之傳教事業，一聚焦其在戰亂時期於華北各地的機動性工作；就前者而言，福傳事業之各項內容及其發展歷程固為關注目標，然規劃理念、工作團隊、成果特色等部分亦為本研究之剖析重點；就後者而言，戰亂期間之福傳工作如何進行且成效為何?宗教與政治、軍事的關係如何界定及劃分?教廷立場、修會態度與世俗社會觀念的差異又為何? 以上課題均為筆者甚感好奇且亟欲釐清者。筆者期望透過此一研究計畫案能更深入地掌握天主教聖言會在華傳教歷程，以較完整而全面地呈現其歷史面貌。""Father Thomas Megan, S.V.D. (1899–1951) was an American-born Irish member of the Divine Word Missionaries (Societas Verbi Divini, SVD). In 1919, Father Megan became an official SVD student and was educated at the Society of the Divine Word (Chicago Division). After becoming an ordained priest, he was dispatched for mission work to Xinyang in southern Henan Province, China. In 1933, Xinxiang in northern Henan Province became a new SVD missionary area, and Father Megan was promoted to be the first apostolic prefect there in 1936. Before returning to the United States in 1948, Father Megan had served in China for more than 20 consecutive years, a period that can be divided into three stages: 10 years in Xinyang (1926–1936), about 8 years in Xinxiang (1936–1941 and 1945–1948), and more than 3 years in itinerant and temporary work in northern China during the Second World War (1941–1945); each of these periods of Father Megan’s missionary work in China was associated with distinctive achievements. In this research project, the author explores Father Megan's missionary work in China in two parts: one describes the missionary work in Xinyang and Xinxiang, and the other addresses the more itinerant and temporary work in northern China during the war. The first part emphasizes mission work and related developments as well as the vision, working teams, and specific achievements. The second part focuses on how these missionary activities were made and their results during wartime, how the relationships between religion, politics and warfare were defined and distinguished, and differences between the stances of the Vatican, SVD, and the secular world. By thoroughly exploring these topics, the author expects to clarify the missionary presence of the SVD in China and provide a comprehensive historical overview of his missionary achievements in China."
