Description

Abstract
In 1875, Fr. Arnold Janssen(1837-1909) established the Catholic Society of Divine Word in Steyl of the Netherlands. In 1879, the Society sent its two members Fr. Johann Anzer(1851-1903) and Fr. Joseph Freinademetz(1852-1908) to China for missionary work. They first went to Hong Kong to study, and then moved to southern Shandong in 1882. At that time, there were only a hundred or so Catholic members in the area, and the Society of Divine Word used this as a base to start the missionary work in North China. Since then, until the beginning of the twentieth century, the number of Catholic believers in southern Shandong missionary area has increased to more than 50,000. By the 1940s, the Society of Divine Word in southern Shandong has expanded from one Vicariates Apostolic to five Dioceses. This kind of growth speed and achievements has attracted much attention. This plan focuses on the missionary work of the Society of Divine Word in southern Shandong from the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China (that is, from the 1880s to the 1920s), with a special focus on three key points, namely, (1) the creator of the Society of Divine Word in Europe Fr. Arnold Janssen, assistance and guidance to missionaries in China in the southern Shandong area; (2) the first group of fellows who came to southern Shandong missionary Fr. Joseph Freinademetz, the cultural impact and adjustment he face in Chinese social life; (3) in southern Shandong fellow Fr. Georg Stenz(1869-1928), who has personally experienced serious missionary case, continues and adjusts his missionary work. This multiyear project aims to delineate a comprehensive history of the Society of the Divine Word in China and serve as a reference for academic.
