Description

Abstract
The Kuroshio is a western boundary current in the North Pacific. It transports water and heat from low latitudes to high latitudes and affects the weather and climate of the Northern Hemisphere. Therefore, to further understand the variation of Kuroshio is very important, especially in the region near eastern Taiwan because it is an eddy-rich zone. Meso-scale eddies profoundly influence the flux of momentum, heat, salt and even ocean-atmosphere systems. When eddies interact with the Kuroshio, it would affect the path, transport, and velocity of Kuroshio. Hence, the aims of this proposal are to investigate the distributions of eddies in the northwestern Pacific and to examine their impacts on the Kuroshio when they interact with the Kuroshio. The absolute dynamic topography data derived from multi-satellite altimetry and the Argo drifter data are employed in this study. The following issues might be answered after the project is finished. They are 1) the distributions and sources of eddies interacting with the Kuroshio off the eastern Taiwan; 2) the influence depths of these eddies can be reached; and 3) the effect and mechanism of different impacts on the Kuorshio."
