Restoration release of hundreds of 5 cm fingerlings of the year by the Shei-Pa Refugee Hatchery, Ministry of Interior Affairs, Taiwan, to the upstream of Chi-Cha-Wan River had been continuously held each year from 1990 to 1999. However, there was no persuaded action ever taken for the investigation of the effect after these annual releases of fish, except the monitoring on the total numbers of fish with the annual count of a five kilometers stream census by skin diving investigators. Tagging Taiwans landlocked salmon with Visible Implanted Alphanumeric (VIA) was concluded the best one among several other tags in the experiment on Japanese species, O. masou masou, in 2002. All of the 2001 year class of Formosan landlocked salmon in the hatchery will be tagged with VIA within months in the beginning of 2003. Monthly sample of 30 to 50 fish in hatchery for length and weight data as well as the individual tagged information will be recorded for the preparation of further release experiment. This long term study is aiming at the comparisons on the annual recaptured individual spawners historical growth data inside history before and after released to the wild as well as the comparisons on the growth data between the released population and the hatcherys. Estimation of released survival rate and the reproduction potential will be used as important indicators in evaluating the contribution of the released fish to their wild mother population.
