Description

Abstract
"Welding is indispensable in the engineering application. The heterogeneous mechanical properties at the weld metal and the heat affected zone might cause a premature failure of the welds. The purpose of this study is to develop a technique and the theory for producing a uniform mechanical property weld without post-weld heat treatment. The concept of nano particles will be used as the heterogeneous nucleation site to induce the nano grain of solidified microstructure in the weld metal. In the mean time, the study will conduct on the nano particle and amorphous phase in-situ formation in the weld metal during welding for the novel structural materials of nano-steels and bulk metallic glasses. The constitutive equation and numerical simulation will be used to confirm the residual stress measurement and distribution. It is hoped that after three years of intensive research, a better picture on the nano microstructure of the weld metal and its effect on the mechanical property provides a good start for the future development of the bulk nano structure material and the weldment."
