Description

Abstract
珊瑚藻為一群藻體具鈣化且所有生殖結構皆位於囊腔中的古老海洋性底棲紅藻珊瑚藻廣泛分布於世界海域,在全球海洋生態中是極為重要的海洋生產者。其中,藻體為殼狀且分枝無分節的無節珊瑚藻(=殼狀珊瑚藻)具有形成生物礁體,其進行鈣化作用時,可以吸收海水中的鈣離子產生碳酸鈣累積於細胞壁中。殼狀珊瑚藻藉由鈣化作用層層向上生長的過程,使得藻體緊密的與周遭的其它鈣化生物緊密相連,經過千年的累積後,形成以殼狀珊瑚藻為主體礁體,也就是藻礁。臺灣北部具許多殼狀珊瑚藻,從新北市石門、三芝與淡水、桃園縣觀音直至新竹縣新豐,皆有大面積的藻礁,其中以桃園觀音藻礁(=礁灰岩)面積為最大。我們過去數年在殼狀珊瑚藻多樣性的研究發現,雖然觀新藻礁海域已被劃為「觀新藻礁生態系野生動物保護區」,但觀新藻礁海域因海水污染及淤沙日愈嚴重,藻礁生態和生物多樣性尚未變好,反而衰退。今年入夏以來,因位於桃園大潭藻礁的觀塘工業專用港將被擴建成興建第三液化天然氣接收站的開發案,引發許多環保爭議性問題。然而,吾人對桃園藻礁生態系的主要造礁組成份子-具活性殼狀珊瑚紅藻的野外生殖生態、生活史和族群季節性變動情況,了解甚微,至今仍沒有相關的系統性研究。因此本計畫將針對桃園海岸藻礁生態系進行一系列的長期生態保育研究,此次提出一個3年的短期研究計畫,將朝三個方向進行:1)桃園藻礁的造礁珊瑚藻種組成及覆蓋率季節性變化野外監測。2)桃園藻礁的主要造礁藻種的生殖週期及生活史生態研究。3)選定桃園藻礁主要造礁的殼狀珊瑚藻的藻種來探討藻體生長活性與環境因子變化(i.e. 營養鹽、水溫、光照、淤沙等等)之間的關聯性。 Coralline algae are a group of ancient red seaweeds, characterized by the presence of calcite in their cell walls and all the reproductive structures produced in conceptacles. Coralline algae are important marine producers with a wide distribution around the world. In particular, crustose coralline algae (=CCA), the non-geniculate coralline algae, are capable to form algal reefs. When CCA absorb Ca2+ from ambient seawater and produce CaCO3 to acuminate in the cell walls. As CCA growing and undergoing calcification, the calcified crust thalli along with some other calcified organisms in their vicinity formed biotic reefs or algal reefs after thousands of years. Many algal reefs are found in the northern Taiwan, among them, the algal reefs in Taoyuan County are the biggest reefs. During the CCA diversity survey in the past years, we found the algal reefs in the Guanyin and Sinwu protected areas have been degraded by seawater pollution and are covered by sand and soils. The algal reef ecosystems in the Guanyin and Sinwu protected areas is not benefit from the establishment of the protected area and are not well maintained. In the past summer, many environmental and controversial issues have been heavily discussed when the government announced that third Liquified Natural Gas Receiving station will be built in the DaiTan algal reef area. However, the main algal reef-building components, namely, the ecology of the crustose coralline algae in the Taoyuan algal reefs are not well studied in terms of the life cycle, reproductive patterns as well as seasonal changes of CCA communities. Therefore, we propose to undergo a long-term ecological study on the seasonal changes of the CCA communities as well as the life cycles and the reproductive pattern in relation to the environmental changes. In this 3-year research proposal, we will investigate (1) the CCA species component and seasonal changes in the Taoyuan algal reefs; (2) the reproductive cycle and life histories of the main CCA species in the Taoyuan algal reefs; (3) exploring the relationship among the growing condition of the dominant CCA species and changes of the environmental factors (e.g. nutrients, water temperature, light, silt, etc.).
