Description

Abstract
A large-area survey was carried out in October 1996 at fifteen sampling stations in the northern South China Sea (Fig. 1). Copepods were collected form the upper 5m with a conical net (4.5m long, 1m mouth diameter, 0.33mm mesh size). Seventy-two species belonging to 32 genera of copepods were identified. The twelve most abundant species were respectively Acrocalanus gracilis, Paracalanus aculeatus, Oncaea venusta, Undinula vulgaris, Clausocalanus paululus, Acartia negligens, Corycaeus gibbulus, Lucicutia flavicornis, Cosmocalanus darwinii, Temora discaudata, Acrocalanus gibber, and Clausocalanus furcatus (Table 1), and the index of species diversity was relatively high at all stations (Table 2). The four most abundant species accounted for over 50% of the total number of the identified copepods (Fig.2). More copepods were found nearer the shore than further offshore (Fig.3.) The distribution and abundance of 12 most common copepod species at each of the sampling stations is shown in Figure 4. Statistical analysis of data for the 48 most common species shows that they fall into 4 groups (Fig.5). The stations distribution patterns of these 4 groups of species is shown in Figure 6.
