Description

Abstract
"The resurgence of mosquito-borne disease have been increased nowadays. Dengue and malaria are very serious diseases in the whole tropical and subtropical regions. Taiwan also has previous history of dengue epidemics since in 1902 to 2007. Major epidemics of dengue occurred in the Southern part of Taiwan. The continued usage of synthetic chemicals such as DDT, malathion, temephos and others led to the insecticide resistance to mosquito diseases vectors and these aggravate the problem by several folds. Alternative methods of mosquito control are much popular in place of the chemical control agents. Biological control is being used successfully for mosquito abatement. Some of the biological control agents of mosquito larvae are not natural to environment such as mosquitofish which is exotic species and very harmful for the native species. So we want to explore some eco-friendly method for mosquito bio-control. In the present project proposal, It is intended to assess the use of copepods for mosquito larval control and their behavioral study in the lab. In this study we will select the most useful predatory native copepod species around the Keelung and will perform some of the predation efficiency tests and behavioral experiments for the mosquito control strategy. And this study also includes the role of appendages in capturing ability of copepods. The proposed method is an eco-friendly, safe, cost effective and self replicative technique and thus decreases over-reliance on the synthetic insecticide. To the best of our knowledge, no study has been performed on mosquito-copepods interaction in Taiwan. So this study will be very useful and may be effective for the mosquito control"
