Description

Abstract
The aims of this study are to understand “Effects of hydrothermal vents on biodiversity and bio-resources and the sustainable development of hydrothermal vent ecosystem” at Kueishan Island. We will carry out the research in the areas near shallow water hydrothermal vents and the surroundings of Kueishan Island, off the northeast coast of Taiwan. The samplings, laboratory and in situ research, and further analysis will be conducted from the period of August 2015 to July 2018. The objectives of the present study cover: (A) Conservation of marine resources and restoration strategies at near shore of the Kueishan Island. (B) The changes and trends of coastal and ocean resources, in the waters of Kueishan Island. (C) Assess the impact of Global warming and acidification on marine resources in near shore of the Kueishan Island. (D) Establish action guidelines and strategies of conservation for marine habitat in the Kueishan Island. (E) Study the influence of ocean currents, tides and sediment transport in the waters of the Kueishan Island. (F) Functional maintenance for ecosystems of marine and coastal of the Kueishan Island. This project is part of the team works and will combine and integrate all PIs efforts to reach the goals above. We will continue the past research efforts on zooplankton ecology and behavior research in Kueishan Island. Laboratory and in-situ study will be carried out simultaneously. The effects of global warming and ocean acidification will be simulated by using Kueishan Island as a template. A systematic and integrated study on the hydrothermal vents of Kueishan Island will allow us to understand the physiological responses and ecological adaptations of vent organisms. This integrative research of the hydrothermal vent research will allow us to integrate the multiple fields of the behavior, ecology, physiology and molecular biology to the adaptive mechanisms in vent habitats. This is a necessary step to promote the comprehensive and sustainable development of the hydrothermal vent ecosystem. In conclusion, this team research can make Taiwan to be one of the leading countries in hydrothermal vent research.
