Description

Abstract
" " The East China Sea shelf (ECSS) is one of the largest continental shelves in the world oceans. The enormous amounts of nutrients are reportedly supplied by the runoff of the Yangtze River and the year-round upwelling of Kuroshio off northeast of Taiwan. The high nutrient input renders the ECSS highly productive, and thus makes it an ideal site to study the carbon exchange between the shelf seas and open oceans. The Long-term Observation and Research of the East China Sea – III (LORECS-III) project has proposed a comprehensive plan to study the particulate carbon cycle in the ECS. Nevertheless, another important component in the oceanic carbon cycle study, i.e. the dissolved inorganic carbon system that is the largest reservoir of carbon in seawater, is not yet included in the integrated LORECS-III project. In order to fill this gap and to better understand the carbon cycle in the ECS, this sub-project aims to systematically study the carbonate system in seawater. The main goals of this proposed study are: (1) To testify whether the 「continental shelf pump」 works in the ECS; (2) to study the response of carbonate system in seawater to the change of Yangtze River run-off, in terms of both discharge and material fluxes; and (3) to understand the potential impact of Asian sand storm on the carbonate system in the ECS oligotrophic waters.
