Description

Abstract
"Flathead mullet Mugil cephalus distributes world widely from around 42oN to 42oS latitude, and inhabits in coastal water, estuarine, and freshwater river, and is an abundant estuarine-dependent marine fish species. Matured mullet migrates southward to southwestern Taiwan for spawning during winter and is one of the most economically important fishery species. Recent year, research using a set of ten microsatellites and one mtDNA (COI) locus to analysis the population structure of mullet in the northwestern Pacific, and three cryptic species of M. cephalus were identified within this region. This project aim to combine the molecular biotechnology and otolith ecogeochemistry to investigate the spatial and temporal population distribution, migration pattern and ecology of different population of mullet near Taiwan. We will collect mullet individuals inhabiting in Taiwan main rivers, spawning migration individuals from Taiwan Strait and northeastern Taiwan and mullet larvae from estuaries, and analysis otolith elemental fringerprint and oxygen, strontium, sulfur, carbon and nitrogen isotopes of different population. The detail transhaline and micro-habitat movement, metabolism and trophic habit change, and environmental pollution history pattern will be discussed. Mullet is tolerant to temperature, salinity and pollution, and current project also aims to evaluate the method to use mullet as bioindicator for environmental monitoring methodology for future application."
