塑膠廢棄物污染是海洋中非常重要的一項新興的污染，對於海洋的衝擊全世界科學家們都不斷地在研究與評估，在台灣周遭海域已陸續有專家學者進行相關的報導與研究，然而在塑膠生物圈的相關研究上尚未有詳細的研究與相關報導，台灣東北角地區是海洋塑膠垃圾的熱點，塑膠廢棄物隨著洋流從各個地方不斷地流入此區域，除了塑膠廢棄物/微粒對於海洋生態造成衝擊以外，其上面所附著的微生物更有機會，透過海洋塑膠廢棄物進行傳播，這樣的塑膠生物圈會帶來怎樣的影響，現在尚不了解，若能了解塑膠生物圈微生物族群的風險及可能衍生的問題，將能夠提供更多的資訊與資料，在學術上進行學術探討與發表，在社會層面能夠喚醒國人對於海洋環境永續發展的意識。
