Description

Abstract
(2)Studies on the emerging species in cage culture(1)This project aims to develop a new species for cage culture by establishing techniques in brood stock breeding, hormone based ripening method and artificial cultivation techniques on Oplegnathus punctatus. The growth and development of embryos will be fully recorded for industrial use, and artificial breeding techniques will be set up to increase the production of larva. Moreover, to further fulfill the requirement on cage culture development, research on developing artificial feed will be conducted by evaluating growth, survival rate and feed conversion rate of potential feed formula on O. punctatus.(2)Molecular markers for the determination of genetic polymorphism and heterogeneity of pedigrees, and transcript database of economic traits as well as gene expression analysis will be established in O. punctatus. Furthermore, a genetic database for the parent and progeny of crossbred Oplegnathus sp. will be built. Economic traits and functional markers for marker-assisted gene identification and selection will be established. In addition, probiotics that isolated and identified from fish will be scrutinized for the safety of its usage in aquaculture.(3)Diseases like streptococcal disease and photobacteriosis are two important bacterial problems in cobia culture, and so far the usage of antibiotics is the only way to treat these diseases. However, drug use has led to problems such as the emergence of drug resistant microbes and drug residues in farmed fish. Hence, this project aims to develop a divalent inactivated injection vaccine against these two pathogens and to reduce to loss of cobia culture industry.
