Description

Abstract
This project will develop a 9th–12th grade Chinese version of an ocean literacy questionnaire, which involves forward- and back-translation and the identification of reliability, validity, and measurement invariance. Results from prior studies(e.g., Chang, 2015; Chang, Yang, & Lo, 2014; Lo, 2013; Plankis & Marrero, 2010; Steel et al., 2005) have suggested considerable significant contributions to the promotion of maritime education. However, from the perspective of test and questionnaire development, these studies have ignored establishing the measurement invariance for the questionnaire or test, which may have caused the results of the study to be inadequate. In this project, we forward- and back-translated the 9th–12th grade English version of the ocean literacy questionnaire adopted by the National Geographic Society(NGS), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA), and Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence(COSEE) into a Chinese version. This project resulted in a Chinese version of the ocean literacy questionnaire with beneficial psychometric properties. This project also presented a pilot study and relevant research results. These results indicate the high degree of feasibility of the current proposal and demonstrate the contribution of this project.
