Description

Abstract
SDN 與 NFV/SFC 無疑是近年來網路技術中少數最引人注目的發展。別於傳統網路設備在單一(或 是說特定)網路服務功能的高度軟硬體整合,SDN 主要想法是將network 的control plane 與data plane 分開,如此讓使用者可以自行定義網路規則來處理網路封包。NFV 則從使用者(尤其是電信營 運商)角度來看理想的網路服務的系統架構是什麼。網路服務提供商(例如電信營運商)希望可以有 一個更彈性使用,更方便管理與部署,更容易動態調整網路設定的一個網路設備環境,因此主張將網 路設備硬體與軟體分開,網路設備硬體可以使用一般通用的商用伺服器主機,網路的功能則完全由軟 體來決定。為達到上述的需求,其中一個關鍵的技術則在網路服務功能鏈(service function chaining, SFC),經由SFC 將系統中的不同網路服務功能(network service function)串連起來。無庸置疑的 SFC 在NFV 中將扮演一個重要的關鍵模組。IETF SFC architecture RFC(Request for Comments)(RFC 7665) 推出至今才一年餘的時間,很多設計細節及RFC 中未討論的議題都持續在更新中,同時也有待 研究人員加以深入探討設計的其他可能性與實驗測試設計的可行性與潛在問題。本計畫規劃分兩年執 行主要鎖定下列3 個NFV/SFC 議題做深入探討:Packet Transportation, Service Function Load balance, and Multi-tenancy。第一年主要的工作內容為系統設計與開發,實做一個NFV/SFC 雛形系 統;第二年主要的工作內容為系統整合與效能評估。 It is believed that future network service innovations will be greatly impacted by recently developed three hot technologies: SDN (software-defined networking), NFV (network function virtualization), and cloud-computing. By decoupling network control plane and data plane, SDN provides great flexibility for constructing new packet handling services. On the other hand, NFV advocates decoupling network services (software) from the hardware platforms the network services working on. And thus, conventional network services (for example, Firewall, DPI, IDS/IPS, WOC, to name a few) and many other innovated network services needed in the future can be composited from a rich set of (virtual) service functions provided by public third parties, in the NFV architecture framework. To promote NFV concept, many related internet communities and international organizations are working on different system design issues under the NFV architecture framework. Among many others, IETF SFC (service function chaining) plays an important role in NFV core system design. IETF SFC defines a software architecture for chaining service functions in the NFVI (NFV infrastructure)。While current NFV/SFC architecture proposal looks promising, many design and implementation details need to carefully examined and justified further. In this two-year research project, we are going to design and development a NFV/SFC prototype system, especially on the issues of SFC/NSH packet transportation, SF (service function) load-balance, and multi-tenancy supports.
