Description

Abstract
The proposed study will be conducted to investigate the effects of using a course management system on reducing statistics anxiety of graduate students learning English as a foreign language. Statistics anxiety is defined as “feelings of anxiety encountered when taking a statistics course or doing statistical analyses, that is, gathering, processing, and interpreting data” (Cruise, cash, & Bolton, 1985, p. 92). Statistics learning poses a challenge to graduate students of applied English programs because scholars (e.g., Brown, 1991; Reid, 1994) in the field of second or foreign language (L2) learning often view learning statistics as learning a foreign language. Although L2 anxiety has been much researched, no L2 studies have been devoted to the reduction of statistics anxiety. The proposed study, when completed and published, will contribute to our understanding of the treatment of statistics anxiety. This understanding will offer implications for L2 graduate curriculum, graduate students, and scholars interested in quantitative research. The proposed study will recruit graduate students from several programs of applied English in Taiwan. Most of the participants will have an undergraduate major in social sciences or humanities. At the beginning and end of the experiment, they will be invited to reply to a translated version of the Statistical Anxiety Rating Scale (Cruise & Wilkins, 1980) represented by six dimensions of statistics anxiety: Worth of Statistics, Interpretation Anxiety, Test and Class Anxiety, Computation Self-Concept, Fear of Asking for Help, and Fear of Statistics Teachers. In this experiment, the statistics course will rely on both classroom lectures and the Moodle course management system for teaching statistics commonly used or encountered in L2 research. “A priori” comparisons will be planned before the proposed experimental study is conducted in order not to reduce the power of the statistical analyses involved in this study. Possible difficulties in executing this study may include the sample size, unexpected results of Hypothesis 1, and the Linux operating system, but careful plan should help reduce or remove the potential difficulties that may arise.
