Issue Date: | 2010 | Publisher: | Milkfish Aquaculture in Asia | Abstract: | Modifications of culture system in the history of milkfish aquaculture in Taiwan for more than 350 years has resulted in sustainable production of this species to meet the market demands both locally and internationally. The traditional shallow-water pond culture system and the more modern and intensive deep-water pond culture system are still in practice today. This has resulted in the steady increase in the annual milkfish production. Although no further development is evident since the technology establishment and adoption of deep-water pond culture system, Taiwan milkfish industry is still one of the top in Asia and in the world. Milkfish also ranks second in terms of overall aquaculture production in Taiwan. With continuously increasing market demand for fresh and processed milkfish products, milkfish will remain one of the important species for aquaculture in Taiwan. |
