Issue Date: | 1986 | Publisher: | The First Asian Fisheries Forum | Abstract: | Grass shrimp (Penaeus monodon) culture is a rapidly growing, profitable industry in Taiwan. The total annual production of grass shrimp increased from less than 1,000 t in 1976 to more than 30,000 t in 1985. The economic importance of shrimp culture in Southeast Asian countries has also been widely recognized. Continued development and expansion of the industry might eventually lead to competition for markets. The culture methods for extensive semi-extensive and intensive culture systems in Taiwan are described and their economics analyzed. Speculation are made on strategies to ensure the continued success of the industry in Taiwan. |
