Abstract:
After five years of development, freshwater prawn farming has received as much
attention as marine prawn farming in Taiwan. The former follows most of the practice
of the latter and efforts have been made by both governmental organizations
and private enterprises to promote the progress of macrobrachium rosenbergii farming.
The indusry of M.rosenbergii has grown to more than 30 farms and hatcheries
comprising nearly 165 hectares. Approximately 65 tons if marketed prawn
and 18.2 million prawn juveniles were produced in the year 1979. The status of M.rosenbergii
farming as well as its extension work are summarized with discussion
of its problems. Various types of pond, pond management, aeration, feed, harvest
and transportation will be illustrated and discussed.
