The genetic analysis of hatchery produced species has been increasingly important for stock enhancement since the loss of genetic diversity could potentially reduce the sustainability of stocked population. Orbicular batfish (Platax orbicularis) is a novel aquaculture species for stock enhancement in Taiwan. However, little is known for the genetic information of this species. In the present study, we aimed to develop molecular markers for the genetic analysis of this species. A total of 517 Simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were firstly identified based on in silico analysis of two public genomic data sets. 24 polymorphic SSRs were further selected and validated using multiplex PCR and high throughput sequencing (Illumina platform). We eventually found 7 highly polymorphic SSRs ideal for the genetic assessment and management of P. orbicularis.en_US
