為配合國家海洋立國政策，本學院針對國家的需求及學校的資源，發展特殊專業的教學暨研究團隊及實驗室。與海洋科學有關之研究內容主要包括海洋物理、化學、生物、地質、全球氣候變遷、海岸變遷、海洋遙測、水下搜索、地震與斷層之監測。與海洋資源有關之研究包括海洋資源探勘與發展續利用、環境生態保全、和大陸礁層資源調查。本學院也積極擴展海洋事務、策略、和管理等相關領域之研究，以維護國家的權益，並早日實現「海洋立國」之理想。
